The location: Cyprus, the third largest island in the Mediterranean, is an important regional financial and tourist hub. The country has a high standard of modern living and over 300 days of sunshine annually. Cyprus has a remarkably diverse natural and cultural environment and English is widely spoken as a second language.
Nicosia, capital of Cyprus, combines both old and new in a busy modern commercial and business center and a centuries-old culture. The center of the city is its old quarter surrounded by a Venetian sandstone fortress wall with a moat and heart-shaped bastions. Mosques and palm trees give an oriental atmosphere to the old city. Wander round narrow streets with overhanging balconies and the beautiful restored pedestrian precinct with craft shops, cafes and taverns The new city spreads beyond the walls with a modern Europeanized center of high-rise buildings, office blocks, shops and pavement cafes. expanding into suburban residential areas.

Course Work and Highlights: Special Topics: Politics of Cyprus (3 credits) will explore Cypriot history and contemporary political issues. Special focus will be paid to Cyprus's experience with numerous European empires, modern legacy of ethnic conflict, and path to European Union membership. Site visits to current political institutions will also be a part of the course.

Eligibility:
Chatham undergraduate students must have good academic standing and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher at the time of application and at the commencement of spring 2021 semester. Students must have completed at least 30 undergraduate credits at the time of travel, including at least 15 credits completed at Chatham at the time of travel.
Students must have good judicial standing (to be verified by Office of Student Affairs) and good financial standing at Chatham (to be verified by Student Accounts).
Students must be current Chatham students at the time of the field experience to participate.

The minimum enrollment for this course is 8 students. Each field experience is self-supporting and must meet its minimum enrollment number or it will be cancelled.
