WHY KYOTO?

Kyoto is the cultural and historical heart of Japan. It’s the best place in all Japan to experience traditional temples, shrines, gardens, shops, restaurants and festivals. In short, Kyoto is the most rewarding destination in all of Japan. The Imadegawa Campus is located in the middle of historic Kyoto and is within walking distance of stations on the railways or subways.

STUDY AT DOSHISHA WOMEN’S COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS

The Japanese Studies Program (JSP) is a 12-week program which starts at the end of September and ends shortly before Christmas. The program offers up to 15 female international students both intensive Japanese language courses and Japanese culture and society courses in English. Japanese students of DWCLA also participate in the culture courses.
The Japanese Language Immersion Course (JLIC) began in 2008. It is composed of two summer four-week long terms. Term A runs from the end of May to the middle of June and term B is held from the middle of June to the middle of July. Students can study one or both terms. The program offers introductory Japanese language courses to students whose first language is not Japanese. Throughout the program, students have full access to all the facilities available on campus.

ELIGIBILITY

• Open to female undergraduate or graduate students
• Good academic standing (2.5 GPA or higher)
• Six months Japanese language experience required prior to program start
• One year’s residency at Chatham
• 18 years or older

ACADEMICS

The JSP (fall term) consists of Japanese language courses and Japanese culture and society courses: Four 90-minute classes, plus one supplementary class with teaching assistants, per week. The Japanese language classes are divided into three levels, Elementary A, Elementary B, and Intermediate C. Participants take a placement test on the day of orientation and are placed in the appropriate 2-5 students in each class. Japanese culture and society classes are taken with current DWCLA students and are delivered in English. The JSP offers 4 Courses. Participants are required to enroll in at least three of the four courses.

During the JLIC (summer term), students will participate in ten 90-minutes classes each week that will help develop each student’s Japanese language skills. In addition to the classes, students will have the opportunity to experience Japanese culture through various activities: Kimono wearing, tea ceremony, calligraphy, flower arrangement and Japanese confectionary making, etc. Students will also have the chance to visit temples and shrines in Kyoto and Nara.

ACCOMMODATIONS

DWCLA offers two types of accommodations:

• Homestay (two meals per day): Live with the family of a DWCLA or Doshisha University student or graduate. Host families reside within 90 minutes from Imadegawa Campus.

• Mukaijima Gakusei Center (a single room and no meals): Single rooms with kitchen are available in the Kyoto municipal dormitory for international students.

The dormitory is around 45 minutes (25 minutes by train and 20-minute walk) from the Imadegawa campus. Free internet access is available only in the shared study room and lounge, not in private rooms.

Decisions about accommodations will be made based on availability and each participant’s request.
