Spain is a country on Europe’s Iberian Peninsula, bordered by France, Portugal, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean. With its stone castles, monuments, snow-capped mountains, and sophisticated cities, Spain is well-known for its geographic and cultural diversity. In this field experience, students will engage in a shadowing experience in Valladolid hospitals and clinics. An excursion to Madrid, cultural immersion experiences, cultural experiences led by the Atlantis Project and explorations of Valladolid and Toledo have been planned. This field experience is best suited to students planning to enter health-related professions. During the two-week field experience in Valladolid, student will engage in shadowing European health professionals 6 to 8 hours per day in a variety of medical fields and in different parts of a hospital. Students will have cultural immersion activities and excursions each week. On site lectures will focus on cultural, historical, political and economic forces in healthcare in Spain. Teaching English to medical professionals will be offered as optional community service. This course will meet Chatham's GBL requirement. Eligibility: Chatham undergraduate students must have good academic standing and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher at the time of application and at the commencement of spring 2019 semester. Students must have completed at least 30 undergraduate credits at the time of travel, including at least 15 credits completed at Chatham at the time of travel. Students must have good judicial standing (to be verified by Office of Student Affairs) and good financial standing at Chatham (to be verified by Student Accounts). Students must be current Chatham students at the time of the field experience to participate. Students must be full-time and have completed one semester of Spanish language (or the equivalent) prior to participation. One year of high school Spanish language will also be accepted as meeting the prerequisite requirement. The minimum enrollment for this course is 16 students. Each field experience is self-supporting and must meet its minimum enrollment number or it will be cancelled.
