Study the inclusion of creative work in Indonesian waterside housing environments. The location: Indonesia is the world’s largest island country and has more than seventeen thousand islands. Although many areas are densely populated, the country has vast areas of wilderness that support its high level of biodiversity, natural resources, and agricultural products. This field experience will visit Yogyakarta (Java) and Bali. Course Work and Highlights: The 2018 MM field experience is a variation of the research done during the MM 2016 field experience, continuing the collaborative work of the US Indonesia Partnership Program (USIPP). Chatham faculty and students will work with counterparts at universities in Jogyakarta and Bali to study waterside housing enviroments and the inclusion of arts and creative work in those environments. During the field experience and in the prerequisite course, peer to peer work with Indonesian students will be stressed. Students will tour and document neighborhoods and study the Balinese compound house as a type. Excursions will include visits to the 9th century temples Borobudur and Prambanan in Yogyakarta, and Ubud, Tampak Siring temple, Kintamani volcano and Mount Batur on Bali. Housing: Housing will be in hotels, with double occupancy or larger groups. Prerequisite course: IAR 213: Special Topics: Indonesia (to be offered spring 2018) Eligibility: Chatham undergraduate students must have good academic standing and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher at the time of application and at the commencement of spring 2018 semester. Students must have completed at least 30 undergraduate credits at the time of travel, including at least 15 credits completed at Chatham at the time of travel. Students must have good judicial standing (to be verified by Office of Student Affairs) and good financial standing at Chatham (to be verified by Student Accounts). Students must be current Chatham students at the time of the field experience to participate. The minimum enrollment for this course is 16 students. Each Maymester program is self-supporting and must meet its minimum enrollment number or it will be cancelled.
