Program Description

The Location: This field experience will travel from Pittsburgh to Berlin, Germany and then on to Brussels, Belgium. Berlin, as the capital of Germany, is the home of the Bundestag, or German Parliament, as well as numerous monuments and world heritage sites. Brussels, the capital of Belgium, is de facto home of the European Union, the location of the European Parliament and a number of other principal EU institutions.
Course Work and Highlights: This program will examine the concept of European identity and how national identity affects European identity. We will also examine EU policies that are related to the concept of identity, such as immigration, language, social service delivery and employment support. The focus in Berlin will be on German identity and examination of the Nazi legacy, East-West reunification and the incorporation of minority identities (especially Turkish gastarbeiter and Syrian refugees) into German identity. In Brussels the focus will shift to the Belgian linguistic divide and EU levels. In both cities we will meet with policy-makers, academics and journalists who focus on these issues.
Housing: Students will stay in double, triple or quad rooms in local hotels.
Prerequisite course: POL 217 – European Identities (spring 2018), or previous enrollment in an approved course on Europe, or permission from the Instructor.

Eligibility:
Chatham undergraduate students must have good academic standing and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher at the time of application and at the commencement of spring 2018 semester. Students must have completed at least 30 undergraduate credits at the time of travel, including at least 15 credits completed at Chatham at the time of travel.
Students must have good judicial standing (to be verified by Office of Student Affairs) and good financial standing at Chatham (to be verified by Student Accounts).
Students must be current Chatham students at the time of the field experience to participate.

The minimum enrollment for this course is 16 students. Each Maymester program is self-supporting and must meet its minimum enrollment number or it will be cancelled.
