Program Description

Improve your English at Chatham University!

The English Language Program (ELP) at Chatham University is known for exceptional personal attention and strong commitment to student success. The ELP offers:

• Dedicated instructors with experience teaching English all over the globe
• Small class sizes
• Ten intensive instruction levels
• Six seven-week sessions per year
• Understanding and helpful staff

ELP courses are taken by Chatham undergraduate and graduate students, visiting students from around the world (who can transfer these credits back to their home institutions), and non-degree-seeking language training students. Students develop the linguistic skills and content knowledge that allow them to thrive in a challenging academic environment.

Upon arriving at Chatham, students take a placement test and are placed in one of ten levels of instruction.

Levels 1-3

1A & 1B: Basic
2A & 2B: Low Intermediate
3A & 3B: Intermediate

Students in these levels will take skill-based courses that focus on listening, speaking, reading, and grammar. They may also take a course in U.S. culture.

Levels 4-5

4A & 4B: High Intermediate
5A & 5B: Advanced

Students in these levels take both skill-based courses and content based courses. Content-based courses focus on such topics as:

• U.S. Culture
• U.S. Literature
• U.S. History
• Other courses adapted from Chatham’s undergraduate curriculum, and co-taught by faculty from various academic departments.

Chatham is in the heart of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Chatham is located in Pittsburgh, which has been consistently named the “most livable” city in the U.S. and one of the safest cities in the world. Pittsburgh is a center of education, technology, healthcare, and global corporations.

Chatham is located between two of Pittsburgh’s most popular neighborhoods, Squirrel Hill and Shadyside, and is just minutes from downtown. Students are within walking distance of dozens of cafés, restaurants, bars, movie theaters, grocery stores, and Pittsburgh’s largest park, Frick Park.

With a Chatham ID, students can take public transportation for free. Students also have access to all other services Chatham has to offer, including tutoring services, workshops, dining services, postal services, counseling services, and many others.

Activities

ELP students have lots of opportunities to practice English outside the classroom, with local and international students on campus and throughout Pittsburgh. Chatham offers activities including field trips, a conversation partner program, weekly conversation hours, international karaoke nights, and holiday celebrations.

Calendar

To accommodate countries whose academic calendars are different from those in the U.S., students can enter and exit the ELP program at six different times.
